Importance of Niche Choice
If your blog is not just a fun site and the main purpose is to make a profit then your choice of niche becomes very important.
There are two things you must take into consideration: Research this.
- Will there be enough searchers in your niche to enable you to make a profit ?
- How much competition is there? That is, the amount of websites in your niche that you will have to compete with.
Take the keyword of the niche you are looking at and put it into the Google Keyword Tool and analyze the numbers.
The go to Google and do a search using your keyword to see how many pages come up.
As an example try typing in credit cards. The competition is enormous and it would be too hard to get good search page positions for niches such as these. That is why you should narrow your keyword choices or niches to long tail phrases where there will not be as much competition.
QUICK TIP
The basic numbers you are looking for are approximately 3000 searches per month and around 50000 pages or less that feature the keyword as the title or main keyword of the site’s page. Of course the greater the searches and the less the feature pages then the more chance of having a profitable niche.
This tip is based solely on organic search (that is doing a Google, Yahoo, Bing or other search engine search).
When you drive traffic in other ways this will increase your chances of profit.
The more pages that feature your keyword choice, the greater the competition and the harder it will be to profit.
Check the Google search page for your keyword or keyword phrase and see how many adsense ads come up on the side of the search page. This will give some indication of the amount of competition and if it is profitable. The more ads the better if you are planning to used adsense as your profit base.
We are not saying that you cannot rate highly for competitive niches , but it will take a huge amount of effort and very hard work to do so…..and a ginormous amount of time. people in the credit card niche for example have been at it for a long time and have age of domains, a key factor in search engine page placement, along with Page Rank and huge amounts of backlinks to their sites so you may never be able to catch them up. But never say never ………may be you are the pitbull of the pack and just determined enough to do it!
